Response of the Future Development of Main Building by Prof John Malpas, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (2)

Message from Pro-Vice-Chancellor John Malpas

Dear students, colleagues and alumni,

I wish to thank all students, staff, and alumni who have expressed their views on the future use of the Main Building in the past month through attending forums, sending emails and meeting with myself and other colleagues.

As I have re-iterated in my previous emails and at the open forums, no decision has been made on the future long-term use of the Building. During the consultation sessions, we have highlighted the severe constraints we are facing, including, inter alia, the limited space that this University has; the limitations of renovation to this building as a Declared Monument; and the expectation that the building should not be disused for a long period of time. We have heard about a number of potential uses of space in the building not least of which is that it would continue to function as a teaching and learning venue as far as is practicable.

While the University is still waiting for the report to be prepared by Professor Bernard Lim, the independent consultant of this exercise, it is clear that this iconic building will remain in many ways the 'Public Face of the University'.

The sessions have been very useful and we can consider moving on to the next stage of consultation. Therefore, we are now planning to set up a number of design workshops open to all staff, students and alumni, in July. You will be advised of the details of the workshops in June.

If you have any further views, please feel free to email me (jgmalpas@hku.hk) or Mr Henry Ho (henryho.kc@hku.hk). All views expressed will be recorded and analysed by Professor Bernard Lim’s team.

Yours sincerely,

Professor John Malpas
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Infrastructure)
